First week a success!

My weekend plans

We have made it through our first week! Sometimes the first week goes by fast, other times it drags on. I feel like this week was just right. I'm ready for the weekend but I know that I'll be excited to be back here on Monday morning.

It's been a pleasant adjustment making the switch from Grade 3 to Grade 5. There's a lot less things that I need to spend time reminding students to do, and I'm finding that this class really appreciates being able to work in a calm and tranquil environment, so they've been striving for that themselves which is awesome.

I attempted to jump right into math yesterday, but have realized I may need to do some review before we head straight into the new stuff. We were learning about the relationship between numbers when you add or remove zeroes from the end, which once you get the hang of it is a breeze to understand, but I'm going to take some time next week to make sure we have a solid base before moving upwards.

We are going to start our electricity and magnetism unit in science on Monday and Tuesday. We will spend time reviewing what we know about the subject, before starting to learn some new concepts. The weeks that follow will involve more hands-on learning.

We started our geography unit in Social Studies and will be continuing it next week. We've been able to find Canada on an unmarked world map, and are working towards doing the same with the continents and oceans, moving on towards more map skills.

In French, we worked on an introduction poster. I loved reading them, learning interesting things about the students, such as favourite books, foods, and other interesting facts. In doing so, I explained the revision process, and how to correct their own work after I've reviewed it.

In English, we started the Narrative writing workshop. Ask your children about the writing process we worked on this week and see if they remember the steps they went through.

It's been a great week and am happy that there's many more to come.
